Kennesaw State to Host Golf Tournament for Charity

By: CHARLIE CASON

Kennesaw State University and their Sports Management program will host a golf tournament to benefit a charity of their choice, as well as the Sports Management Majors Club.

KENNESAW, Ga.---The KSU Mulligan Madness Golf Tournament is an event that is put on every year by a sports management course and benefits charities and The Sports Management Majors Club.

This year will be the 17th annual golf tournament that KSU has hosted, and it will take place on Friday, April 27th at Towne Lake Hills Golf Club. The goal for the event is to raise enough money to support a different charity each year, as well as the SMMC. The charity that will be a co-beneficiary this year is The Chauncey Davis Foundation, which is a charity benefiting people who have health diseases and diabetes. The tournament will have a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and the entry fee is $75 per player. The entry fee includes the round of golf as well as lunch.

The format for the tournament is a scramble, consisting of four players per team. A scramble is where each player hits a shot, and the team takes the best one out of the group and they all play from there. Alex Chasez, who played in last year's Mulligan Madness, said, "It is a perfect format for an event like this because it provides the best way for everyone to go out and just have fun."

When events are formatted as a scramble, the team scores are generally low and is good competition. "I played in it last year, and the team that won played great and their score was extremely low," said Emily Martin, a sports management major. "Personally, I am terrible at golf and I played with all girls, so our score was terrible but we had so much fun!" The event last year was a huge success and they are looking to exceed their expectations this year.

A portion of the proceeds will go to The Chauncey Davis Foundation and help benefit people suffering with diabetes. The foundation was founded in 2007 by former NFL star Chauncey Davis, and his goal is to educate the youth about health and wellness issues. The foundation aims to help young men between the ages of eight and 28. There are different programs that the foundation offers, including the Chauncey Davis Fitness Camp, Bike 4 Life, and Fit for LIFE. The foundation has thrived since it was started, and it has a very promising future.

The remainder of the money raised is contributed to the SMMC. The goal of KSU's Sports Management Majors Club is to help educate and improve the career development of the students involved in sports management, and to enhance their growth. "It is definitely something that I love being apart of," said Nick Blake, a current member. "I am so proud to be a member and it is a great experience for my future." The SMMC tries to organize events and outings for members as often as they can.
